A: Travel and accommodation expenses for the two-day training in Washington, D.C., are covered by the candidate. The training, including breakfast and lunch on both days, will be provided by The Cancer Project.
Q: Do you have a copy of the application in a Word Document or just a PDF?
A: The application is in PDF format only and thus must be printed and sent in along with your video. The application, resume, and video link can also be faxed to the administrative assistant at 202-527-7496.
Q: Can this be a full-time or salaried position?
A: This is available only as an independent contractor, not an employee.
Q: What is the maximum number of classes I can teach?
A: There is no maximum number of classes you can teach.
Q: How often are the classes held?
A: A series of classes is generally held weekly (one class per week), but different schedules can be arranged.
Q: Are classes held on weekends or weekdays?
A: Classes can be held on weekends, weekdays, or weekday evenings.
Q: Who determines the times?
A:The instructor and the venue agree upon the times.
Q: Is there a contract to sign?
A: Yes, there is a contract.
Q: Is it possible to see a copy of the contract or to know what it entails?
A: Since the contact is a somewhat proprietary document, we only distribute it to individuals we've invited to become instructors. We're happy to summarize the terms for you, however:
- instructor will be an independent consultant
- instructor will distribute class evaluations and update The Cancer Project as requested
- instructor will prepare meals in accordance with The Cancer Project nutrition advice (no animal ingredients, low-fat, high-fiber, etc.) and use only recipes provided by The Cancer Project
- compensation is $200 per class
- payment is made via check within 30 days of receipt of invoice
- The Cancer Project will reimburse for the cost of food, postage, copies, and supplies upon receipt of invoice with detailed receipts
- The Cancer Project will not withhold taxes from consultant's remuneration
- consultant is not an employee of The Cancer Project and receives no benefits
- The Cancer Project indemnifies consultant from liability arising out of nutrition advice/recipes
- consultant agrees to keep proprietary matters/documents confidential
Q: Does the $200 payment include your allotted money for food for the classes?
A: No. The Cancer Project will reimburse you for food. Some venues will pay for the food and this is preferred. All food must be plant-based and must conform to The Cancer Project recipes.
Q: How does the reimbursement for food work?
A: Instructors send us an invoice for the class instruction fees and food and supply costs. All charges must be accompanied by a receipt. All food must be vegan and must conform to The Cancer Project recipes.
Q: Are pots, pans, and cooking utensils provided by you or must we use our own?
A: The Cancer Project supplies all the equipment needed for the classes. The equipment is property of The Cancer Project and must be returned should a position be terminated.
Q: Where are the classes held?
A: Classes are held nationwide in hospitals, cancer centers, grocery stores that are willing to donate food, and other appropriate venues.
Q: Who finds the venues to host the classes?
A: The Cancer Project staff works with the instructors to find appropriate venues.
Q: Who publicizes the classes?
A: The Cancer Project and the instructor work with the venue to publicize the class, if it is public. The instructor will call and sometimes bring postcards, flyers, and posters to local cancer centers and cancer support groups to let them know about the classes. The Cancer Project will send a press release to local media to publicize the classes, and will also contact selected local media via telephone.
Q: What are my chances of being selected if I don’t live in one of your “targeted” cities on the Web site?
A: The Cancer Project looks for the best instructors to represent our organization in communities nationwide. If we find an exceptional instructor outside of a “targeted” city, we will give them equal consideration as those in targeted cities.
Q: When is the next instructor training?
A: Instructor Training will be held in the fall/winter of 2010. A date has not yet been set for the 2010 training sessions.
Q: Is there a time commitment on the contract (one year, two years, etc.)?
A: Either The Cancer Project or the consultant may terminate the contract with one day written notice. However, given the costs involved with training, equipping instructors with supplies, etc. we have the expectation that our instructors will make a good faith effort to be actively engaged in promoting The Cancer Project's mission for a period of more than one year.
Q: Is there a quota for the number of classes (per month, per year, etc.)?
A: There is no specific quota that applies in all instances; we work with the instructors based on their available time and our needs in a specific city. However, we are ideally seeking instructors who can commit to doing at least four four-class series a year.
Q: How is advertising handled? Are there template flyers, etc.?
A: We have copy templates that venues can use to promote the Food for Life classes in their own materials, such as postcards to customize and distribute, oversized posters to customize and post, and customizable 8-1/2” x 11” flyers.
Q: Is there a minimum age to be an instructor?
A: The Cancer Project's age requirement for instructors is 21 years old. |
