Confronting the Epidemic through Nutrition Research and Policy

Anne PalmerAnne Palmer, has been the program director for the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future since 2006, where she is responsible for directing the food and nutrition programs. This includes identifying opportunities to build awareness about the current food system and its impact on public health and the environment; working with city government to form a food policy task force; and helping to create programs to build food security and demand for healthy food in Baltimore City. Prior to this position, Anne worked for 13 years developing and managing strategic communication plans and public health mass media campaigns and programs in Pakistan, Indonesia, India, and Nepal. She serves on the Community Food Security Coalition board, is a member of the Baltimore City Sustainability Commission’s Green Infrastructure working group (2008-2009), and a member of the regional steering committee for The Food Trust Farm to School for the Mid-Atlantic region.

Presentation Title: The Role of Policy in Improving School Food Environments

Objectives:

  • Introduce the concept of food policy councils and their role in local and state government

  • Briefly review how public health has been impacted by changes in the overall food system as related to childhood obesity 

  • Provide examples of how food policy councils in the United States have addressed childhood obesity and the school food

  • Present the case study of Baltimore’s Food Policy Task Force and its links to Baltimore’s strategies on childhood obesity and school food

Outcome: Participants will recognize the role of policy (local and state) in improving school food environments.
