Hormone Therapy Doubles Risk of Breast Cancer
A recent study by scientists at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research
Center found a 2.6-fold higher incidence of lobular breast cancer
in women who took the estrogen and progestin hormone therapy combination.
The study focused on 537 women aged 50 or older who had breast cancer
and 492 who did not.
Currently, approximately 8.6 million U.S. women take the combination
treatment, and 12 million take estrogen alone. Lobular cancer occurs
in the milk-producing lobules. It accounts for 10 percent of breast
cancer cases and is on the rise, having increased 35 percent between
1988 and 1995.
