Panel Discussion: Processed Meat, Policy, and the Road Ahead for Nutrition and Cancer Research

Speakers:

  • Neal Barnard, M.D., president of The Cancer Project, the Washington Center for Clinical Research, and the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine; adjunct associate professor of medicine at George Washington University; and author of 14 books.
  • Stephen L. Joseph, Esq., president, CEO, and founder of BanTransFats.com, practicing law since 1980, and a member of the California and District of Columbia Bars.

Presentations:

Synopsis: Panelists Neal Barnard, M.D., Stephen L. Joseph, Esq., and a member of Congress will be inspiring discussion about translating nutrition recommendations to public policy. Dr. Barnard will focus on nutrition research and his experience as principal investigator on several clinical trials, including a National Institutes of Health-funded study on diet and diabetes. Stephen L. Joseph, Esq., will discuss his experience leading the nation in the ban on trans fats as a platform for inspiring public health and policy changes. 

Intended Audience: Internists, oncologists, registered dieticians, registered nurses, cancer researchers, policymakers, and others interested in cancer and nutrition policy issues.

Objectives: Upon completion of this panel discussion, participants should be able to:

  • Know the background of trans fats, its relationship to public health and the move to ban it
  • Understand and explore the roles of government, schools, healthcare providers, businesses and insurance companies, media, and cancer organizations in cancer prevention
  • Consider other initiatives to improve public health and policy initiatives for cancer prevention and survival
